Project Overview

What is Project Cypress?

Project Cypress will use an innovative carbon dioxide (CO2) removal technology known as Direct Air Capture, or DAC, to pull excess CO2 directly from the atmosphere for safe and permanent storage underground.

It will combine two types of DAC technology from leading DAC developers, Climeworks and Heirloom, across two facilities to work as one hub that will remove more than one million metric tons of CO2 directly from the atmosphere each year while providing economic and workforce benefits to Louisiana.

Through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s (BIL) Regional DAC Hubs program, Project Cypress is eligible to receive up to $600 million in funding.

The hub is currently in the project development phase, where project partners are finalizing project sites, discussing partnerships with potential service providers, and more.

Locations

The Louisiana-based Project Cypress hub will include two facilities—the Project Cypress Southwest facility (Climeworks) will be located in Calcasieu Parish near Vinton, and the Project Cypress Northwest facility (Heirloom) will be located in Caddo Parish at the Port of Caddo-Bossier.

Funding

Through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s (BIL) Regional DAC Hubs program, Project Cypress is eligible to receive up to $600 million in funding. So far, the first tranche of funding has been unlocked to allocate $50 million in federal dollars (matched by $50 million in private investment). This tranche is called the planning and development phase where project partners are finalizing project sites, discussing partnerships with potential service providers, and more.

What is Direct Air Capture?

Direct Air Capture (DAC) is a carbon removal technology that draws existing CO2 directly from the atmosphere through the use of machinery (fans) or minerals (limestone) for safe and permanent storage underground.

DAC is not carbon capture. Carbon capture traps CO2 from a point source like a factory or power plant and prevents emissions from entering the atmosphere. DAC, on the other hand, removes CO2 that has already entered the atmosphere.
